Spring Fever and Garden Catalogs
Spring has sprung, the grass has ris, I wonder where the birdies is–Heathcliff
Greetings Gardeners,
March is starting to tantalize us with a smattering of warm days, aren’t we ready for spring?
When spring fever hits and the garden catalogs are arriving but old man winter hasn’t quite given up yet here are a few things you can do.
Go to your local garden center and just walk around the greenhouses on a sunny day, I guarantee you’ll have to remove your coat. I love to close my eyes and just take in the smell of warm moist soil and tender green shoots.
While I’m there I like to pick up compost or mulch to dress the beds I didn’t get to in the fall. I also like to pick up some seeds and maybe a starter tray for my window sill.
This is the time of year when I go over my pruners with oil check out my supply of garden gloves, so when that first lovely day arrives I’m ready.
I go through my catalogs and clip and keep any new and interesting plants I want to track down this year. I look through garden magazines from the library and my stash to plan combinations for my containers.
With the economic crunch this year consider the perennials you have that need thinned, do any of them have interesting forms or great flowering abilities? Would they make a nice less expensive addition to your planter?
What about using a space for dual purpose instead of lining your walk with begonias how about red lettuce. Fresh garden salad… and great curb appeal.
Seed exchanges whether online or local are great ways to perk up a space on the cheap.
I’m excited to use my leaf mold as mulch this year… I received chopped leaves from the city 2 years ago and they have aged nicely into mulch/organic matter and they didn’t cost me a dime.
No matter what happens on wall street, look forward to this exciting season, be creative and enjoy the serenity of the outdoors on your street.
Happy Gardening
Marci
